Welcome, and thank you for taking the time to visit my website. As a Black Mountain, NC, resident who has exhibited my paintings in Asheville, I was one of hundreds of artists severely impacted by Hurricane/Tropical Storm Helene, which struck Western North Carolina in late September 2024. Surging floodwaters, forceful winds, downed trees and cascading landslides caused unprecedented damage and claimed more than 100 lives.

Flooding devastated much of Asheville's River Arts District, destroying some venues and heavily damaging others -- including Trackside Studios, which housed some of my paintings. Though Trackside has since reopened, I do not currently have artwork there. You can always view my paintings here on my website, however, and on my "Heaven and Earth Art" Facebook page, as well as on Instagram (@black_mountain_artist).

This page shows all of my paintings. Click on an image to see its dimensions and medium. You'll also see a "Go to" link that you can click on to email me with comments or questions, including about pricing. Paintings that have already sold say so in their descriptions and also appear on the "Archived Paintings" page.

For now, I'm continuing to process the tragedy that has affected so many. I am hopeful that, through the mysterious alchemy of creative work, beauty will somehow emerge from the painful events associated with Helene. In the meantime, my heartfelt thanks for your understanding, interest and support.

'Hare On Fire'

Acrylic on 11" x 14" canvas panel A hare barrels toward an uncertain future. Though conceived as lighthearted, this painting took on pandemic-related angst as I worked on it. The hare seemed frantic as suggestions of lines from charts and graphs appeared.

'Lady In Lavender'

'Last Cast'

12" x 16" oil on canvas panel -- SOLD While aboard a schooner to see Independence Day fireworks, my husband, other passengers and I were treated to a spectacular sunset at Boothbay Harbor, Maine. All of us agreed Nature's "preshow" was worth the price of admission!

'Cosmic Wings'

24" x 20" coated stretched canvas print. SOLD. Quality prints available. In 2009, the Hubble Space Telescope captured the image that inspired this painting -- NGC 6302, the so-called Butterfly Nebula. It comprises an exceptionally hot dying central star racing across space at more than 600,000 miles an hour, but hidden by cosmic dust creating a “wingspan” that covers more than 3 light years. The “wings” are actually roiling cauldrons of gas heated to more than 36,000 degrees Fahrenheit.

'Storm Surge'

24" x 30", oil on canvas. SOLD. Like many, I had a "Me Too" story, and the flood of others' revelations and momentum for change reminded me of a storm surge that's been building for some time. The bright sunlight and positive energy in this image offer hope for constructive change amid the turbulence. I am grateful to Jeffrey Dunne for allowing me to use one of his photos as a reference for this work.

'Sea Change'

24" x 30" gallery-wrap canvas. SOLD. The stark contrast of crows with sea foam, framed by dramatic shadows from pier supports, captivated me as I strolled the beach late one September afternoon at Oak Island, N.C. Possible interpretations of these images continue to surface, much as a tide deposits treasures or a dream reveals layers of meanings over time.

'Course of Nature'

22" x 28" oil on canvas. Though I generally prefer more natural landscapes, I was fascinated by a photo Jack Ollis took at the Black Mountain (NC) Golf Course early one morning in late autumn, when cooler temperatures met warmer water, creating a play of light with the rising mists, and adding a touch of magic to the managed land. I am grateful Jack let me use his photo as a reference for this painting.

'Chicks Lit'

8" x 10" oil on canvas panel -- SOLD A pair of chicks nestles, warm sun at their backs.

12" x 16" oil on canvas panel -- SOLD A gentle divide between sand dunes opens a path to the sea.

'Care to Join Me?'

18" x 24" oil on gallery-wrap canvas. The resident cat at a B & B is confident that her place is wherever she chooses to be.

'Nature's Way'

16" x 20" oil on unframed gallery-wrap canvas. Like an emblem of Nature's cycles, a sun-bleached tree splays against living foliage along Marginal Way, a walk above the rocky shoreline of Ogunquit, Maine.

'Compostela'

20" x 30", oil on gallery-wrap canvas, SOLD Translated "the field of stars," the title is a Spanish name for the Milky Way galaxy that contains Earth's solar system. Here, a river flowing through northern Chile's highlands reflects the luminous band of light. Thanks to National Geographic photographer Babak Tafreshi and The World at Night program for kindly permitting me to use the photo that served as my reference.

'Summer Fields'

12" x 16" oil on canvas panel. When I visited the middle coast of Maine in July, I wasn't surprised to see rocky shorelines -- but was pleased to discover a gentler, no less appealing beauty in rolling fields and meadows that emanated the very spirit of summer.

'Sunshine Girl'

14" x 11", oil on canvas panel (NFS). Roxy, who with her sister Kinsey lives with my husband and me, is often on the move but seems to enjoy relaxing in sunshine as much as most cats do.

'Light Dance'

30" x 24" oil on canvas. SOLD. The inspiration for this painting came from an image taken Feb. 6, 2015, by Astronaut Terry Virts, a flight engineer with Expedition 42 on board the International Space Station; it shows Ireland, United Kingdom and Scandinavia from an altitude of 267.8 miles on a moonlit night under an amazing and ever-changing Aurora Borealis (commonly called the Northern Lights).

'Paired Pears'

8" x 10" oil on canvas. Two pears share the spotlight, casting reflections, in this simple scene.

'Either Oar'

12" x 16" oil on canvas panel. SOLD. Lunch break? Time for a beer? Wherever the rowers have gone, these docked boats await their return.

'Resolute'

oil on 18" x 24" gallery-wrap canvas. The hope, unity and peaceful determination I witnessed at a march the day after the USA's 2017 presidential inauguration filled my spirit. My mixed hope and concern for my country's future became red flowers -- a blend of femininity and courage -- and storm clouds. The bold poppy and threatening sky are vigilance and resolve; the wind turbines, renewal and energy. Combined, they are an invitation to ally with natural forces greater than ours.

'Carpe Diem'

30" x 20" oil gallery-wrap canvas. SOLD. Sun-infused, scarlet poppies juxtaposed with serene blue mountains proved irresistible to my artist's eye. The scene, captured by photographer Gypsy Flores in Corsica at sunrise, exudes vibrancy, energy and hope. It completes a trilogy of poppies paintings that reflect an evolution in my own and others' feelings following a divisive presidential election. I appreciate Gypsy's kind permission in allowing me to draw inspiration from her work.

'Repurposed'

24” x 18” coated stretched canvas print. SOLD. While driving south of Black Mountain along NC Highway 9 one spring morning, I spotted a striking juxtaposition: life sprouting from something many would consider “dead” – the back-end of an old Chevy pickup, now cradling a variety of flowers.

'Down by the Sea'

8" x 10" oil on canvas panel. SOLD. Key to beach ecosystems, dynamic dunes shift with winds and tides, and lend beauty to shorelines.

'Calle de Colores'

11" x 14" oil on canvas pane -- SOLD Even in shade, bricks and vibrant buildings along this "street of colors" in historic St. Augustine, FL, radiate warmth and light.

'Light Me Up'

8" x 10" oil on canvas panel.

'State of Grace'

24" x 18" oil on canvas -- SOLD After a cleansing early shower one spring morning, the rising sun gilded the mountains to the north of my home, infusing the scene with quality somehow both pristine and primeval.

'Whisker-Warming'

16" x 20" oil on panel. A sleepy cat's pleasure in sunbathing makes a human's pale by comparison.

'The Rose Galaxy'

24" x 30" oil on canvas -- SOLD I've always loved roses, so I was captivated by the image that inspired this painting, as well as by the galaxy’s popular name. In 2011, the Hubble Space Telescope was aimed at a group of spiral galaxies. The rose-like shape of the larger one (UGC 1810) is caused by the gravitational pull of the galaxy below (UGC 1813). The smaller one actually dived through the larger, creating the spiral pattern. Hot young blue stars surround the group.

'Pisgah Pastoral'

24" x 24" oil on canvas. SOLD. While strolling the grounds of the Pisgah Inn near Mt. Pisgah on the Blue Ridge Parkway, I was struck by the contrast of bright winterberries and the stark beauty of a leafless tree.

'Silent Enchantment'

22" x 28", oil on canvas. The innocence and wonder of a December snowfall blanketed the area surrounding my home with peace -- and created enticing contrasts between the crimson shed and the cool snow and shadows.

'Beach Rose Boat'

16" x 20" oil on gallery-wrap canvas. A boat rests along an Ogunquit Beach tidal inlet, with the flora often associated with coastal Maine growing nearby.

'Runaway Star'

24" x 30" oil on canvas. SOLD. I was intrigued by the image taken by the Spitzer Space Telescope in 2015 that inspired this painting. Called “Zeta Oph: Runaway Star,” it’s about 20 times more massive – and 65,000 times more luminous – than the Sun, and would be one of the brightest stars in the sky if it weren’t obscured by “cosmic dust,” caused when its larger companion exploded. Its stellar wind heats and compresses dusty interstellar material, shaping the curved shock front.

'Autumn Ecstasy'

18" x 24" oil on gallery-wrap canvas. I enjoy walking on the mountain on which my husband and I live, particularly on crisp, clear autumn days. Looking upward one October morning, I was enchanted as sunlight illuminated bright seasonal foliage.

'Cape Ann Cove'

12" x 16" oil on canvas panel. Foliage and rocks ring calm waters on a summer day in Massachusetts.

'Cloud Cairn'

20" x 30" oil on canvas. Clouds assume many fanciful forms; to my eye, this graceful, glowing column resembled a stack of smooth stones.

'Joyful, Joyful'

18" x 14" oil on canvas panel. SOLD. Wildflowers appear to exult in the Western landscape they inhabit.

'Points Unknown'

11" x 14" on canvas panel. SOLD This bunny no sooner hopped onto my canvas than she decided to hop off. Unlike the title I'd given the painting, she's headed for a home in Florida (it was purchased before I'd had a chance to post it here).

'Mountain Meadow'

20" x 16" oil on canvas.

'Flowers for Larry'

24" x 18" oil on canvas. SOLD.

'Door Prize'

16" x 20" oil on canvas. SOLD. Faded beauty abounds in the historic section of St. Augustine, Florida, a favorite getaway for my husband and me when we lived in the Daytona Beach area. These old doors fastened to fencing delighted me as much as some of the district’s distinguished buildings.

'Plein Air Painter'

24" x 18" oil on canvas. I decided that a fellow artist added interest to the scene during an en plein air workshop held at my home one fine June day.

Carolina Dreamin'

oil on 11" x 14" canvas panel. Dappled light and shadows add to the intrigue of an Asheville, NC, entry.

'Got Mice?'

oil on 11" x 14" canvas panel. SOLD. A glossy cat appears to have hunted and dined well in a nearby barn.

'The Revelation'

24" x 30" oil on canvas. A routine chat over coffee on a Sunday morning -- or something more? We never know when the life of someone we pass on the street has just been turned upside down. Nearby empty chairs suggest transience. Out of the shadows, truth comes to light. Who is doing the revealing, and what is the nature of the truth?

'Tucked Away'

11" x 14" oil canvas panel. SOLD. An appealing place to recharge sometimes appears at just the right time when you’re exploring an unfamiliar city.

'Shadow Talk'

16" x 20" acrylic on canvas. Branches and shadows frame fall foliage and reflections on the French Broad River in Asheville.

'First Blush'

12" x 16", oil on canvas panel. SOLD For those of us who love autumn in the mountains, the debut of colorful foliage never fails to delight. My breath caught one September day when I came upon this bright spray of an leaves and the dappled morning light.

'Glamour Girl'

11" x 14", acrylic on canvas panel (NFS). Months after I painted her sister Roxy, our cat Kinsey finally struck a pose in good lighting so I could render her portrait.

'March Madness'

16" x 20", acrylic on board. Early light plays across season-straddling snow and forsythia.

'Frequent Forager'

12" x 16", acrylic on canvas panel. SOLD. A sun-drenched field under brilliant skies, a weathered barn, a wisp of vapor rising through foliage--such simple things, such soul-satisfying things ...

'P-town Cottage'

11" x 14", acrylic on canvas panel. While visiting Provincetown, Mass., at the tip of Cape Cod, my husband and I spied a waterfront cottage that inspired this rendering.

'Jubilation'

12" x 16", acrylic on canvas panel. SOLD. Sun casts a glow across mountaintops and wildflowers, as if to highlight and celebrate Nature.

'Entrada Festiva'

('Festive Entryway') 11" x 14" oil on panel. Tucked along intriguing side streets in historic St. Augustine, FL, are unique doorways like the one that inspired this rendering.

'Nestled In'

12" x 16", acrylic on canvas panel. SOLD. There's something soulful about buildings as they settle into rural landscapes. The old stone barn in Yorkshire, England, that inspired this painting could evoke any number of country road scenes.

'Limelight'

11" x 14", acrylic on canvas. Sunlight intensifies a building's bright hue, adding drama to a quiet street.

'Parkway Proud'

12" x 16" oil on canvas panel, unframed Supposed experts suggested record rainfall and heat augured dull fall foliage in Western North Carolina in 2018. Scenes along the Blue Ridge Parkway near Asheville in late October boldly declared otherwise and inspired this painting.

'Setting Out'

12" x 16" acrylic on canvas panel. Sun-splashed mountains promise a hiker a satisfying trek across the Roan Highlands. (Thanks to Travis Bordley, www.travisbordleyphotography.com, for generously allowing me to use his photo as a reference.)

'Sun Seekers'

11" x 14", oil on board. SOLD. Sunflowers unfold, lured skyward by the sun's warmth and light.

'Salt Marsh Serenity'

12" x 16" oil on canvas panel. Tranquil wetlands fringe the tip of Cape Cod, a contrast to the nearby colorful congestion of Provincetown streets.

'Ribbon of Light'

30" x 15" oil on gallery-wrap canvas. Aurora Borealis undulate above the coastal village of Reine in Norway's Lofoten Islands. I am indebted to Alex Conu, whose award-winning photo inspired this painting.

'Pitcher Pears'

'Catch The Color'

20" x 16" oil on gallery-wrap canvas. Seasonal foliage forms a vibrant backdrop for a solitary fisherman's peaceful pursuit.

'Sit A Spell'

12" x 16" oil on canvas panel. Begun en plein air at a friend's house and finished in my studio, this cheerful painting -- whose title echoes one of my beloved Southern grandmother's phrases -- invites viewers to consider putting aside to-do lists to simply sit, be -- and behold.

'Soulstice'

16" x 20" oil on panel. A year of record rainfall drenched our area, and a massive winter storm deposited mounds of snow. Then, as the day of the Solstice approached, the glow of the rising sun lit up a bank of trees and infused my soul with joy, hope -- and even a sense of magic.

'Coastal Dawn'

24" x 18" oil on gallery-wrap canvas. The reflected glow of a sunrise evokes fond memories of an Oak Island, N.C., beach retreat with friends, as well as my enduring connection to the beaches of Florida's East Coast.

'Daybreak Drama'

12" x 16", oil on canvas panel. Sometimes, everyday circumstances present us with arresting images. Such was the case early one summer morning as I walked the mountain on which my husband and I live; I was captivated by the sharp shadows verdant leaves cast against the slope on which they grew.
